Blogging is one of the easiest ways to make money online. I know a lot of bloggers who make over $50,000 per month through their blog. One good thing about blogging is that you will keep making money forever even while you sleep, as long as you keep updating your blog with new contents for your readers.
Blogging is not a get-rich-quick scheme, neither is it a Ponzi scheme where you will invest $100 today and start making $100 the next month. You have to put in all the work, stay up all night writing contents and working on the SEO of your blog. According to a research by InternetLiveStats, there are over 1.3 billion websites on the internet.
Another good thing about blogging is that you will learn on the job. This means you become a better blogger as you keep writing, and creating contents. Sometimes, I read some of the contents that I wrote several years ago, and I will just smile be grateful for how far I have come with my blog.
In this article, I will tell us how I started my blog with just $1 and currently earning $1000 per month through that same blog. Seems surprised? Yes you are and I expected you to be.
How to start a blog with $1 and make $1000 per month
This is my personal experience, not the common copy and paste kind of content you see when you search for how to start a blog online.
Growing up wasn’t really an easy ride especially coming from Africa. After graduating from the University, I entered into the labour market in search for a job. During these periods, I searched for jobs during the day, while I looked for means to make money online with my phone and my old and tired-looking laptop at night. I got access to the internet at a very young age, so searching the web wasn’t really a big deal.
I learnt about blogging from a man I meet on Twitter, and he told me that before I can start blogging, I must first know what I want to blog about (niche). That day, I spent the night searching for blogging niche to specialize in. Some niches include business, technology, insurance, health, sports, travel, fashion, etc.
For you to enjoy your blogging and ensure the quality of your contents, you have to niche down. Example of niching down is, let’s take sports niche for example, sports is very broad and there is no way you can cover all the sports in the world, you can break the sports niche into different sports, such as football, boxing, basketball, volleyball, etc., to enable you concentrate on a particular sport to blog about.
After choosing football, you can still niche down. For instance, you picked football niche, there are over 200 football leagues across the world and their is no way you can cover all of them in your blog. You can pick a particular league to concentrate on, for instance, the English Premier League. If you want to make money from blogging and build your audience, then you must niche down.
Let me give you another instance of niche selection of blogging. For instance, you decided to blog about fashion, you can niche down to kid fashion, men fashion, female fashion, etc.
Selecting A Niche For My Blog
Once you find the perfect niche for your blog, then you are closer to creating your blog. The following are some factors to consider when searching for blogging niche:
- Your area of expertise
- The CPC of the niche
Finding a good niche for my blog wasn’t difficult. I am an accountant, so I selected accounting niche. One thing about this niche is that it will be difficult to create contents for your blog if you are not an accountant. So, consider your interest and area of interest before you choose what to blog about.
Choosing a blogging platform
There are different blogging platforms to choose from. They include:
Due to the fact that I started my blog with a small budget, I opted for the Blogger platform, since it is free. The downside of this platform is that it is difficult to use, doesn’t look very professional, and you don’t own your blog. I will advise you to move to WordPress when you start making money from your blog.

Buying A Domain Name For Your Blog
You need a domain name for your blog to make it look professional and drive traffic. Traffic is the number of people visiting your blog, either organic, social media or paid.
Without buying a domain name, your blog will look like this yourblogname.blogspot.com. After you buy a domain name, your blog will look like this yourblogname.com. The first or second, which do you prefer? You see why a domain name is necessary?
When choosing a name for your blog, select a name that when someone hears or sees your URL, the person will instantly know what the blog is all about.
What to consider when choosing a domain name
The factors to consider when choosing a domain name for your blog include:
- Make it easy to remember
- keep it short
- Check if the social media handle for the name is available
- Make it simple
- Complement the name with the description of the website.
You can buy a domain from any of domain name seller. Personally, I got mine from GoDaddy for $1 for the first year of purchase. Subsequently, I paid another $20 per year. This is a small fee compared to what I earn in a year from my blog. After buying the name, you will connect your domain to blogger for more visibility. See how to add domain name to blogger from GoDaddy.
Creating Content For Your New Blog
Content is King. You must create contents for your new blog so that you can generate traffic and earn. Since you have a niche, you should write contents that are related to that not. For instance, you are in the insurance blogging niche, your topic should be about insurance alone. You can’t be an insurance blogger and publishing contents about football on the same blog.
Before creating any content, you must do your keyword research to know what people are searching for and write about it, or the problems that need solution and provide solution to them through your blog.
Just as I mentioned above, content is king. You don’t want to publish a poorly written article that will chase readers away from your blog after few seconds. Ensure that your spellings and sentences are correct. Avoid copy and paste because it is the easiest way to kill your new blog.
Steps In Creating A Blog Post
- Search for blog topics
- Do keyword research
- Define your audience
- Write an outline
- Create an engaging content
- Write an irresistible headline
- Pick relevant images
- Optimize your content for SEO
- Edit your blog post
- Publish your content

How To Make Money From Your Blog
I know this is the part you are waiting for. The goal of every blogger is to make money right? That’s correct! But making money shouldn’t be the ultimate goal. Providing solutions to people’s problems should be the goal. When you do that, the money comes without you stressing yourself.
There are different ways to make money from blogging. The most popular is Google AdSense. I got most of my earnings from Google AdSense before I started generating money from different means. Other ways of making money from your blog include:
- Affiliate marketing
- Selling ads space
- Sponsored posts
- Link insertion
- Banner advertising, etc.
Blogging is a serious business. Making money from blogging is not for the weak, neither is it what you will just start today and make money from it the following week. You need patience, hard-work and dedication to scale through.
At some point, you will want to give up and abandon your blog. That’s one of the darkest period for any blogger. I have been through that period, and it wasn’t easy. This is why I advice new bloggers to get a job while blogging, so you will have a means of paying your bills before you start earning from your blog.
From my experience, if you can successfully pass that phase without giving up, then you are on you way to making money from blogging.
